About Cushman. In 1901, two cousins began the Cushman brand in Lincoln, Nebraska, building farm machinery and two-cycle boat engines. During World War I, Cushman provided two and four horsepower engines to operate water pumps, cream separators, washing machines, and wood saws. By World War II, the company was producing scooters used by the Navy.

Cushman created a military-spec scooter called the Model 53 by combining a pre-exisiting engine with a very simple (and cheap to make) stamped steel frame.
