Chief Lake landing (Town of Hayward) is at the end of Chief Lake Road off County Highway NN. There is no parking available. The Chippewa Flowage has an abundance of sand and rock bars, stumps, floating bogs and floating driftwood, which makes for a good fish and wildlife habitat but could damage boats. These features are not shown on maps.

When the Chippewa Flowage was created in 1923, much of the land that was flooded was swamp. Many of these swamp areas, actually peat bogs, floated to the surface. Over time seeds scattered by the winds and birds flying overhead germinated on the bogs. Plants from grasses to trees began to grow.
